The Somerset Levels and Moors – A Brilliant Birding Destination
Rooks Bridge sits towards the northern edge of the Somerset Levels, an area covering over 160,000 acres and providing some superb birding locations. Following peat extraction during the 1960s, the Somerset Wildlife Trust has transformed the landscape into lakes, reed beds and wet woodland. These relatively new habitats draw in waders, flacks of starlings and numerous rare or elusive breeds including bittern.
The Avalon Marshes Centre is around 30 minutes drive from our shop at Rooks Bridge and is surrounded by some excellent locations such as RSPB Ham Wall, RSPB Greylake, Westhay Moor National Nature Reserve, Shapwick Moor and Shapwick Heath Nature Reserve.
Further south, RSPB Swell Wood and RSPB West Sedgemoor (by pre-booked appointment only) are about another 30 minutes drive south towards the Blackdown Hills at the southern end of the Levels.
The Somerset Wildlife Trust also maintains a large number of small reserves dotted across the Levels with a diverse range of habitats which offer opportunities to see a huge variety of flora, butterflies and insects as well as birds.
