Vanguard Comfort Harness

Now in stock. We think this is probably the most comfortable and practical binocular harness we’ve come across. Here’s what Vanguard has to say about it:

“The longer you spend time out and about bird watching or looking for local flora and fauna, the heavier and more awkward your binoculars can seem to become. A binocular often starts out feeling light, but after considerable time spent hiking it suddenly begins to feel like the neck strap is cutting through the back of your neck. What little weight there is becomes a constant reminder that you have something around your neck. Your chest becomes sore and you are aggravated from the number of times the binocular has bounced off your sternum as you jumped a log, or stood up too quickly from a crouched or low position.

Binoculars with neck straps often bang into a fallen log or bounce off trees as you navigate obstacles.

What you need to eliminate such problems is to try a good Bino-Harness for your trip.  Vanguard offers the PH-1 harness to help make your time more enjoyable and comfortable.

The PH-1 passes over your shoulders in an “x” pattern away from the neck, putting the weight and strain on the bones and muscles of your shoulders and back area providing much better support and ultimately more comfort.

Good harnesses attach to the binos via free sliding fixtures which move up the strap as you raise them to view. With such a system held at eye level, there is no strain at all. The straps are continuous, passing through the fixtures and around your back. This means that the binoculars are held much closer into your chest at all times, no matter what you are doing. This eliminates sternum discomfort and provides a secure, easy way to carry and protect your binoculars.”

GPO Now At In Focus

We are pleased to announce that we have been able to add German Precision Optics (GPO) binoculars to our online and in-store range.

The Passion ED line includes 8x and 10x models with either 32mm or 42mm objective lens. All use ED glass to minimise colour fringing and the body of each binocular is constructed from magnesium to ensure light weight and durability.

At the top of the GPO range are the Passion HD models which the company has pitched against similarly priced models from Leica and Zeiss. There are 8×42 and 10×42 options in this line.

As always, we recommend that you visit one of our shops to try this new range. Please call ahead to check that the model you are interested in is in stock.

Leica Binoculars Available Online

We have added a selection of Leica binoculars to our online shop.

This selection includes the top of the range Noctivid, the latest Ultravid HD Plus line and the ever-popular Trinovid HD range.

Several of our shops also carry a select range of Leica binoculars – please contact us for more information.

Birdfair Has Its 30th Birthday

As always we will be in attendance at Birdfair on the shores of Rutland Water in the heart of England.

If you are looking for new binoculars, your first scope or want to talk about part exchanging your existing optics, the In Focus marquee is the best place to come. Located right next to the main optics marquee we offer one to one advice – no hassle, no jostling for position, no time limits. Unlike the displays in the main optics marquee you can compare products from a number of brands at the same time. And we have the perfect view across the lagoon to help you choose as you can see from the photo!

This year we have a few highlights including:

  • 30th anniversary special offers on a wide range of Zeiss binoculars and scopes – come and see us for more details
  • a chance to see and try the excellent new Nikon Monarch HG 30mm binoculars
  • the brilliant new Zeiss Harpia 85mm and 95mm scopes will be in stock for you to take away on the day
  • special offer prices on a selection of Opticron scopes

Every purchase includes a donation to the fair’s chosen conservation project. The proceeds of this year’s Birdfair will support the creation of Argentina’s largest national park, in the process providing a refuge for nearly a million flamingos and shorebirds.

We look forward to welcoming you to our marquee from Friday August 17th to Sunday August 19th!

New! Hawke Frontier ED X – Now In Stock

All shops have stock of the new Hawke Frontier ED X binocular or order online here.

Here’s what the company has to say about it’s latest product:

“Using a superior optical system, designed around ED glass, the Frontier ED X produces stunning colour retention, crisp definition and excellent light transmission, you are sure to be blown away by its performance in the field.

The benefits of the Extra-low Dispersion glass and first class coatings throughout are clear to see. Controlled chromatic aberration eliminates colour fringing allowing all detail to be clearly visible.

All Frontier ED X binoculars pass through a strict quality control inspection to ensure all aspects match design intent. They are optically checked for resolution, light transmission and Strehl Ratio for optical image formation. They are further tested in extreme operational temperature conditions from -15°C to +55°C and storage temperatures -40°C to +70°C. Final checks of waterproofing to IPX7 and fog proofing are tested.

Available in a choice of green or grey body, in either 8× or 10× magnification.”

Opticron DBA VHD Gets Revamp

The latest version of the range-topping Opticron DBA VHD binocular show a real improvement in performance – impressive given that we liked the first DBA VHD a lot anyway!

The company has updated some of the coatings in the optical system of the DBA VHD+ to boost light transmission and this results in an even brighter image. Combine that with excellent sharpness and a low weight and you have a great birders binocular.

We normally carry both 8x and 10x models in stock at all times but do phone your local shop to check before visiting.

Also available to order online here.

Nikon: New Monarch HG 30mm Models

Nikon Monarch HGWe’ve just received confirmation of the pricing for the new Nikon HG 30mm binocular models – 8×30 £799, 10×30 £829.

Available now.

This is the press release the company issued this week.

“Nikon today announces the introduction of the lightweight and compact 30mm-diameter models (8×30 and 10×30) to the MONARCH HG series – the most advanced series in the history of MONARCH binoculars.

The 30mm-diameter model is both compact and lightweight, with its magnesium alloy body weighing just approx. 450 g. It provides a sharp and clear view all the way to the periphery and maintains a wide field of view with natural colour fidelity – both features of the MONARCH HG 42mm-diameter model, but in a smaller body.

As with other models in the MONARCH HG series, these new binoculars feature the same sleek design and deliver the same fine performance. The binoculars’ wide apparent field of view (60.3° for the 8×30 and 62.2° for the 10×30) provides spectacular viewing, while the Field Flattener Lens System assures a sharp and clear view all the way to the lens periphery. The use of extra-low dispersion (ED) glass corrects chromatic aberration that can cause colour fringing to achieve a contrast-rich and high-resolution image.

A high-quality multilayer coating is applied to all lenses and prisms. Dielectric high-reflective multilayer prism coating and phase correction coating are applied to the roof prisms, which combine to achieve a bright view with light transmittance of up to 92 per cent or higher, plus natural colour fidelity.

The compact magnesium alloy body offers waterproof/fog-proof performance (up to 5 m for 10 min.). The high performance prevents fogging inside the optical system even in low-pressure environments up to altitudes of 5,000 m.

This new model comes with a neck strap that reduces strain on the user’s neck, and a semi-hard type case to protect the binoculars in transit. Nikon’s MONARCH HG 30mm-diameter binoculars are ideal for bird or nature-watching enthusiasts, as well as those who enjoy different kinds of outdoor activities and want to travel light.

Key Features

• High-quality multilayer coating is applied to all lenses and prisms while dielectric high-reflective multilayer prism coating is applied to the roof prisms, achieving a bright view of up to 92 per cent or higher light transmittance, and natural colour fidelity

• Scratch-resistant coating is applied on the objective lens and eyepiece surfaces
• Long eye relief design ensures a clear field of view, even for eyeglass wearers
