The introduction of an ED version of the GS665 has provided a lightweight scope to rival that of the now discontinued Kowa 613. However the GS is fully waterproof and takes a wide variety of eyepieces including the new SDL 16 -48 x zoom eyepiece.So if you want a lightweight scope with high end performance this could be for you. The ED glass provides improved definition for magnifications over 35x and when using the new SDL zoom we found excellent definition at the highest magnification. Colour correction was also improved, as expected, in the ED version. Close focus was down to under 4 meters. The scope body weighed in at just over 1000 gms making it truly lightweight.

Other features include twin focus mechanism which allows for adjustment from infinity to 50 meters in just a 270 degree turn. As with the whole GS range the scope will rotate round it's main axis to allow observation from high windows or hide slots.

The ES 80 GA ED is a step up from the standard and uses an ED objective. This extra low dispersion glass element within the objective lens system virtually eliminates the distorting effects of chromatic aberration at magnifications over 35x . The HDF 32x eyepiece offers a wide field of view at the most commonly used magnification. For those wishing the flexibility of a zoom the HDF 20-60x works like a dream on this scope, a wide field of view, excellent resolution and a lack of chromatic aberration make this a definite 'best buy' at around £600.

Just in from Opticron this 5 group 8-element ‘super’ zoom has been designed to maximise the performance gains inherent in ED objective glass at higher magnifications. It offers an optimum ratio between field of view and resolution. It is a waterproof eyepiece and has a twist up down eyecup. When tested on a GS815 scope the resolution was excellent producing a sharp and very bright image with fantastic colour correction. It is truly a top end eyepiece which will now afford Opticron to compete with the most expensive of competition. So can we fault it, not really except to note that the high eye-relief eyecup does mean that for most the eyecup may have to be turned down about half way. Other than that is comes very highly recommended - try one out !
