NIKON ED82
In the ED78 Nikon produced a scope with great resolution and light gathering for a compact 78mm scope but it had two problems, it wasn't waterproof and the zoom eyepiece suffered from colour aberration. The new ED82 has a fully waterproof body and a new zoom eyepiece that lacks any colour fringing. Combine this with phenomenal resolution and sensible pricing and you have a scope that is surely a contender for the crown of best large format scope.

It is the shortest of its rivals and therefore the most compact and has a close focus of 16 feet, which is similar to both the Zeiss and the Swarovski. It's reassuring build quality does increase the weight a little and while on paper it is 5.2 oz heavier than the Zeiss and just over 10oz heavier than the Swarovski, in the hand it simply doesn't feel that much heavier.

A comparison of fields of view on low magnifications using the zoom eyepiece is difficult as the Nikon's lowest magnification is 25x, compared to 20x on the Zeiss and Swarovski, so it does look smaller. The clarity of image was maintained right up to 75x magnification, which may prove useful for extreme distance viewing where large magnifications are required. However at these magnifications a steady tripod is required and in this test the new Delta Super Carbon Fibre was used.

For anyone changing over their scope and looking at the top end of the market this scope is a MUST for comparison. At the top end of the market the Zeiss, Swarovski and Nikon are all excellent, but with the price of the Nikon well below the competition this new scope represents perhaps the best value for money.
